Where CALVINN™ Began – A Watchmen Origin Story
The origin of CALVINN™ is deeply tied to one of the most innovative series in recent television: HBO’s Watchmen.
In 2017, SCANable was brought on as an integrated part of the visual effects team, responsible for the Cyberscanning of all characters, props, vehicles, sets, and real-world locations. Our work was foundational in empowering the series’ award-winning visuals—both the spectacular and the invisible.
From creating digital doubles for key cast members to capturing every fine surface detail of iconic props and environments, our scanning pipeline ensured VFX teams had the accurate, high-fidelity data needed to integrate visual effects seamlessly into complex storylines and stylized visuals.
Our contributions were especially instrumental in bringing characters like Dr. Manhattan and “Looking Glass” to life. The reflective mask, central to his identity, required incredibly precise and realistic digital integration—something only possible with the dense geometric and photorealistic data we provided.
The show’s visual effects were praised not just for what audiences could see, but for what they didn’t—invisible visual effects that elevated the story without calling attention to themselves. SCANable’s work helped achieve that subtle mastery.
The name CALVINN honors both the technological legacy we built on Watchmen and the narrative connection to Cal Abar, the human identity of Dr. Manhattan, another digital character brought to life through visual effects. This project marked a transformative milestone for our company—deepening industry relationships and setting a new bar for mobile volumetric capture that ultimately led to the development of the CALVINN™ system.
